Distillery info

BenRiach distillery is located in Speyside, just outside the city of Elgin. It was founded in 1898 by John Duff as the sister distillery of Longmorn.

The two distilleries were connected with a private railway where a private steam locomotive would carry raw materials, barrels and spirits between the two distilleries.

Although Scotch was exported, sales in the domestic market began to fall and after the bankruptcy of Pattison’s Whisky (a great Scotch purchaser), the distillery had to stop production in 1900.

The distillery’s malting floors would still be used, but it would take no less than 65 years for the distillery to start production again in 1965.

In 1965 it was Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. that acquired the distillery and resumed production.
The distillery changed hands several times in the future: In 1978 Seagrams took over, while in 2004 an independent consortium named BenRiach Distillery Company Limited would acquire it.

Finally in 2016 it was sold to Brown Forman, with the distillery still growing in fame and production as they can reach a total amount of 2.8 million liters per year.
