Benrinnes is located in Aberlour, Speyside just at the foot of the hill Ben Rinnes.
The first distillery in the area was founded by Peter Mackenzie in 1826, but unfortunately it was destroyed by a flood 3 years later in 1829.
John Innes rebuilt the distillery in 1835 and changed the name in:”Lyre of Ruthrie”. After going bankrupt, it was sold to William Smith, who changed the name again to the one that is used until today: BenRinnes
The distillery was almost destroyed again in 1896 (this time it was a fire) and during the 1950s and it was rebuilt and renovated by John Deward & Son company.
With a partial triple distillation process its production would be almost exclusively used in blends. The triple distillation process was abandoned in 2007 by the distillery’s current owners, Diageo.
Until today the majority of the 2.5 million liter per year production, will be used in blends.
