It was the year 1843, when William Matheson acquired the farm and the local brewery and turned it into a distillery.
For 44 years the distillery stayed in the family, when in 1887 it was sold to Glenmorangie Distillery Co only to be sold again after the First World War to a partnership between MacDonald & Muir and Durcham & Co.
The production would be sold as an ingredient in blends and although its own bottling started from 1920, it was not before 1960 that the distillery’s focus turned to single malt bottling with great success.
This success led the distillery in addition of new stills from time to time while since 2004 until today, LVMH are the new owners.
Glenmorangie distillery is known for distilling in the tallest stills in Scotland. It is said that the necks of the stills are as tall as a giraffe, with the distillery considering giraffes as their spirit animal.
The annual capacity can reach over 6,5 million liters.
