Distillery info

The Macallan Distillery is located in Easter Elchies, Speyside. Alexander Reid would be the first to obtain an official license in 1824 for whisky production in the area.

The distillery was firstly known as the Elchies distillery and remained in Reid’s hands until 1868 when James Stuart acquired the lease and rebuilt the distillery.

Roderick Kemp got control in 1892 and it is believed that he is responsible for changing the distillery’s name from “Elchies” to “Macallan”. Although Scotch distilleries would always produce more whisky for blends and less for single malt production, Kemp and his descendants would always focus on the single malt production and bottlings.

In 1996 the Highland Distillers (now Edrington) would be the new owners until today.

Managing a massive reputation, this focus on single malt production led to further focus on the maturation process and barrels, with Macallan today being one of the few distilleries that supervises the whole process of cask making in order to use it for its whisky’s maturation process.

Through the years, expansion and improvement were always required and in 2018 a new distillery and a visiting center was built.
