Distillery info

Wolfburn distillery is located in Thurso, Caithness. It is the most northerly mainland distillery in Scotland.

William Smith founded the distillery near the town of Thurso in 1821. The distillery took its name from the nearby water source.

The distillery was an immediate success. It is considered that in 1826, its annual production would reach 125,000 liters.

The distillery remained in Smith hands and continued to grow in reputation. When William Smith passed away in 1845, a period of decline began, with the distillery finally being closed around 1858.

The distillery remained closed for over 150 years, until Aurora Brewing set in motion the plan of the distillery’s revival in 2011.

After locating the ruins of the old Wolfburn distillery, a new distillery was founded nearby and used the same water source. The new distillery started operating in 2013.

The first bottlings of the new-born distillery have already gained awards and reputation. Long fermentation and gentle distillation are some of the choices that contribute to the distillery’s unique character.
