The Glen Garioch Distillery

Glen Garioch distillery is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. It was founded in 1797 by Thomas Simpson. For many years, the distillery was self-sufficient in malt since the Valley of Garioch was known as the ”Granary of Aberdeenshire” for its production in barley.

John Manson & Co became the distillery owner in 1837. William Sanderson, the man behind Vat 69 which at that time was one of the top selling whiskies globally, joined the distillery in 1886 before being the sole owner in 1908.

Through several mergers, the distillery was part of the DCL when it was mothballed in 1968. P.Morrison would be the next owner as he acquired Glen Garioch distillery in 1970 and three years later in 1973, production was resumed.

Morrison would be the owner for almost quarter of a century, as Suntory bought it in 1994 and are the owners up to today. The annual capacity of approximately over 1 million liters is used for single malt expressions of the distillery.
