Glen Grant Distillery

Glen Grant distillery is located in Rothes, Speyside. It was founded in 1840 by two brothers, James and John Grant.

In order to be able to spread their product the brothers insisted on a rail line to be constructed between Lossiemouth and Elgin and in 1858 they personally financed the extension of the route.

In 1872 James Grant (who would be later known as “the Major”) became the owner of the distillery. James Grant would always get excited with the latest innovations and during his time the distillery would get expanded and upgraded (it is considered to be the first distillery in Scotland to have electric light) while he also introduced the tall slender pot stills.

In 1931 after the Major passed away, his grandson Douglas MacKessack became the new owner. In 1946 Dennis Malcolm was born on the distillery’s grounds. In 1961 he would start working for the distillery, later become the Master Distiller of Glen Grant until now, as in 2021 he celebrates the 60th anniversary of working in the distillery.

The current owner of the distillery has been Gruppo Campari since 2006 and the distillery has a capacity of approximately 6.5 million liters per year.
