The Glenlivet Distillery

The Glenlivet distillery is located near Ballindalloch, Speyside. George Smith was one of the first distillers in Scotland to get an official license for whisky distillation in 1824.

The whisky he was producing was an immediate success, with its new lighter style (although illegal distillers would threat him from time to time, which led him to carry always a pair of flintlock pistols to protect himself)

In order to keep up with the demand, George Smith made plans for a new and bigger distillery that finally started production in 1859 and is still producing whisky as today.

The whisky made such a success that several distilleries even not near Glenlivet, would use the word “Glenlivet” in their bottles, in order to gain profits from what became a name synonymous to quality whisky.

Finally after three long years in courts, in 1984 the distillery would be named as the only “The Glenlivet”

The Pullman Train Company started serving miniatures of The Glenlivet on their customers and soon the distillery’s reputation would spread across the U.S.

After several changes in ownership, the one of the top selling distilleries, The Glenlivet is now owned by The Chivas Brothers International Limited with Pernod Ricard as the parent company.
