William Grant remained active until 1923, when he passed away and his son John began the first expansion of the distillery. In 1962, David C.Steward began working with William Grant & Sons in the age of 17 and in 1974 he became the fourth Malt Master of the Balvenie distillery history.

For his services to the Scotch Whisky Industry, he received his MBE (Most Excellent Order of the English Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2016.
The Balvenie distillery is still growing and malting a percentage of the barley they use (as they reach a capacity of around 5.6 million liters per year), while they have their own cooperage and coppersmith.
