The Buffalo Trace distillery is located in Frankfort, Kentucky, with company claims that it is the oldest distillery continuously operating in the U.S.A.
The establishment where the distillery still stands was set in 1775 by Hancock and Willis Lee. In 1881 a warehouse was built on the Kentucky River near Riverside and amongst other goods, whisky would be stored.
In 1858 Daniel Swigert set up a small distillery, using the warehouse and the area around it, and in 1870 Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr purchases the distillery and christens it “O.F.C” which stands for Old Fire Copper.
In 1878 George T. Stagg purchases the distillery and starts expanding it, but it is destroyed by a fire in 1882.
It was immediately rebuilt and in 1904 its name changed to “George T. Stagg distillery”.
During the Prohibition era from 1920 to 1933, the distillery got a special permission to produce medicinal whisky and its expansion began again as soon as possible in 1933.
In 1992 the distillery is acquired by the Sazerac company and after renovations in 1999 gets the name “Buffalo Trace distillery”
Several Bourbons are produced nowadays in the facilities, like Buffalo Trace, Blanton’s, Eagle Rare, Benchmark and Van Winkle, as well as rye whiskies like Sazerac Rye. The distillery can reach a production of 10 million liters per year.
