Bunnahabhain distillery is located in the north east coast of the isle of Islay. It is pronounced as “Bunn-na-ha-venn” meaning “mouth of the river” in Scots Gaelic
It was founded in 1881 by the Greenless brothers and relied on sea trade as a road to the distillery wasn’t available until 1960.
In 1887 the distillery merged with The Glenrothes and formed the Highland Distilleries. Its main purpose was providing spirits blends and it was not before the late 1980s that a Single Malt from the distillery was launched.
This changed, when in 2003 Burn Steward took over and along with Ian MacMillan (the master blender of the Bunnahabhain distillery) are now focusing more on Single Malt production adding some peated expressions.
Its huge stills allows them an annual production of approximately 2.6 million liters.
