Glen Spey distillery is located in Rothes, Moray. It was founded in 1878 by James Stuart.
The initial name of the distillery was “Mill of Rothes”. When W&A Gilbey bought the distillery in 1887, its name changed to as we know it today, Glen Spey.
Its main production would be used in blended whisky bottlings, including the famous J & B. After an expansion that took place in 1970 and increased the stills from 2 to 4, the distillery was sold to Watney Mann. After further mergers, Diageo are the current owners.
Glen Spey bottlings are very rare and until today almost the whole production is used as a key ingredient in blends. In 2001 a bottling occurred for the flora & fauna range. The purifiers that were installed in the early days of the distillery in order to separate its character from the nearby distilleries, are still in use.
