Old Pulteney 12 is a Highland single malt whisky that is aged for a minimum of 12 years in oak casks.
Pulteney distillery is located in Pulteneytown in the area of Wick and is one of the most northerly whisky distilleries in Scotland. It was founded in 1826 by James Henderson.
The port of Wick was a major transfer center and as population was rising, in 1810 a new town was founded and named after Sir William Pulteney: Pulteneytown.
The Henderson family would be the owner’s of the town’s distillery for almost 100 years, before being bought by James Wotson in 1920.
Only two years later, the local ward voted for Wick to become a “dry town”. This Prohibition lasted for almost 25 years and along with the economic depression, the distillery was forced to cease production in 1930.
It remained mothballed for almost 21 years. In 1951 Robert Cumming would become the new owner of the distillery. In the next years a series of changes in ownership status took place, until 2006 when Inver House Distillers took control and are the owners of Pulteney distillery until today.
The 2 stills in the distillery have an unusual shape that inspired the shape of their bottles as well.
